bio

Alice Shintani
1971, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Lives and works in Sao Paulo.

Born on the border between Diadema and São Paulo cities, Alice Shintani has a degree in computer engineering from University of Campinas. In the 1990s, she actively worked on the earliest projects to implement the Internet in Brazil. As of 2001, she migrates to the visual arts through extra-academic courses and participation in individual and collective exhibitions in public and private institutions. As of 2010, she began to monitor the reoccupation of public space on the streets of São Paulo. Between 2014 and 2016, she completely disconnects from the art system and works as a full-time street vendor of sweets in Sao Paulo city squares and streets. She returns to the circuit in 2017 when she receives a residency grant at the Delfina Foundation (London, UK) as an award at the SP–Arte fair and thereafter invited as visitant artist at Valand Academy (Gothenburg, Sweden). Since then, she has conducted artistic proposals in the tension between public, institutional, and market spaces. She was one of the artists participating in the 34th Bienal de São Paulo “Though It´s Dark, Still I Sing” (2020-2022) and its traveling exhibition program through Brazilian cities (Campinas, Sao Luis, Campos do Jordão, Fortaleza and Belém do Pará), Chile (Santiago) and France (Arles).

Alice Shintani seeks subtle intersections that exist between art and everyday life. Her art does not comment on the news, nor does it impose itself on the urban fabric like an inert monument, but it deals rather with intimate experiences of everyday affections and violence, which are counterpointed by the gradual process of making, involving colors, shapes, and light. She avoided, however, conforming her production to the settings and structures of the established arts circuit. Through the friction between formal, conceptual, social, and marketing issues, Shintani focuses on the notions of visuality and visibility in order to problematize them. Though much of her work could be called painting, she feeds on direct experiences with the urban environment and societal events, experimenting at the same time with ways of circulating in varied contexts, among audiences less familiar with the liturgy of exhibition spaces.
